Consumers are in for a shock when the new electricity price hikes take effect.
Tuesday, April 20th, 2010Businesses are going to suffer at the National Energy Regulator’s decision to grant Eskom a further increase whilst we are already suffering with our high interest rate and climbing food prices.
Eskom initially asked for a 53% increase. Nersa received more than 40 oral and 300 written submissions during its hearings into the increase.
The National Consumer Forum described the increases as yet another “blow to the poor”. The forum’s Thami Bolani said it was unfair for Nersa to hand down two tariff increases in six months. He further said that it would definitely have a negative impact on consumers who are still battling with soaring interest rates.
The Local Government Association said Eskom’s proposal was driven by “financial considerations to improve its credit rating, thus overlooking the impact of the increase on customers”.
