What is Solar water heating? It is using the sun’s energy to heat your water which accounts for the largest part of your electricity bill.  The panels absorb the energy from the sun, thus making it a stunning renewable energy source. This cuts a significant amount of carbon dioxide emissions from entering the Earth’s atmosphere and ofcourse, thereby lessens the negative impact on the environment hugely.

Energy Minister Dipuo Peters, said the African continent was so behind in implementation of solar water heating mainly due to the previously high costs involved. She said that she was confident that the new 5 year target would be met though, because it is targeted around saving people money.  Eskom has offered incentives to persuade households to turn to solar power. Solar geysers are very basic appliances, heating water via a solar panel fitted to the roof that causes the hot water to rise by convection and then circulate through the geyser. They range in price from about R9 995 for a 150 litre geyser to up to R12 500 for a 300 litre geyser, but you can pay as much as R30 000 from some companies. Always look for them to be SABS approved and the units should come with a 5 year guarantee.  Heating water is only one of the tasks of a solar geyser.
